Biography
Giovanni Abbiati (1865-1928) was an Italian composer, arranger, and music critic. He was born in Milan, Italy, and studied music at the Milan Conservatory. After graduating, he worked as a music critic for several Italian newspapers and magazines. In 1895, he was appointed music director of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, a position he held for the rest of his life.
Abbiati was a prolific arranger, and his work has been praised for its clarity, elegance, and faithfulness to the original composers' intentions. He arranged works by a wide variety of composers, including Bach, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner, and Verdi. In addition to his work as an arranger, Abbiati also composed several original works, including operas, symphonies, and chamber music.
Career
Abbiati began his career as a music critic in the early 1890s. He quickly gained a reputation for his sharp wit and incisive writing. In 1895, he was appointed music director of the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, one of the most prestigious opera houses in the world. Abbiati remained in this post for the rest of his life, and during his tenure he conducted many of the world's greatest opera singers and musicians.
In addition to his work at the Teatro alla Scala, Abbiati also served as a professor of composition at the Milan Conservatory. He was a respected teacher, and many of his students went on to become successful composers and arrangers.
